And I'm expected to do this with TWO kids??

Chris, Abbey, and I traveled to Houston for Memorial Day weekend. Chris' brother, Matt (Uncle Matt-Matt) is leaving in a week to go to Ghana, Africa for two years with the Peace Corps, so we had a going away party for him on Monday. While I was in Houston, I noticed that I had something in my eye. No big deal, right? It was a white speck, right in the middle of my pupil. It didn't hurt, it didn't obstruct my vision, I hadn't seen it before... really, no big deal. All weekend, I tried to move whatever it was off of the surface of my eye (gently, and very few times, so as not to irritate my eye), but when we got home Monday it was still there. Tuesday, I made an eye appointment for today (Wednesday), so needless to say, I've been a little nervous for the past few days.

Today, I show up for my appointment, very nervous, and am waiting for the doctor to call me in. The receptionist checks my insurance, and lo and behold, our insurance company doesn't even recognize me as a patient. Awesome. The doctor goes ahead and calls me back just to get the ball rolling on the appointment and discovers that there is, in fact, a foreign body in my eye. Exactly what I didn't want it to be. I was hoping for a scratch, or anything that didn't involve the word removal.

Back in the waiting area, the receptionist is still on the phone trying to figure out my insurance. I've been almost in tears from the moment I heard the words "foreign body removal" because eye stuff REALLY freaks me out. The doctor pulls be back again to take some pictures of my eye, and then it's back out to the waiting area. Meanwhile, I have Abbey with me who is screaming, crying, hungry (I brought snacks and water- she just didn't want them), and oh yes, farting really loudly. Nice. Poor receptionist is trying to talk to my insurance company on the phone while my child is making every conceivable noise to distract the phone call.

While all of this is going on, I'm calling Chris to fill him in on what's going on, and while I'm at it, I let him know that without insurance, the "removal" costs $350. Seriously? For some numbing drops and a long q-tip... $350?? This is what I'm thinking/hoping the removal will be, by the way. Stay tuned for what actually happened.

When the receptionist gets off of the phone, she informs me that my health insurance doesn't cover optometry (knew that, that's why I have optometry insurance), but that optometry insurance doesn't cover eye health- just vision. GREAT!! Basically, while I'm standing in the waiting area with my screaming, farting child, I start crying thinking about how this foreign body is going to be in my eye forever, and if not, it's going to cost an arm and a leg. Or in my world, a new Coach purse... not like I was going to get one anytime soon, but now I'm sure it will be even longer!

In order to quiet my child, I give her every cinnamon breath mint in my purse, and at this point I don't care what you think of my mothering skills. It worked. It was the only thing that kept her from screaming, "BITE??! BITE??!" Mustering up the last shred of my dignity, I asked the receptionist if I owe anything for this (now, hour and a half) "visit". She said no, so I swiftly left so as not to start crying in front of her. I called Chris, crying, freaking out about my eye, and he told me to go ahead with the procedure.

My doctor felt so bad about the insurance people not being cooperative that he gave me a discount on the procedure (about $50 off), so I'm happy at this point... until the removal process starts. I go back to the room, and I see a small metal kit in my doctor's hands. Nothing good ever comes out of those small metal kits. He proceeds to open it, and inside is a small, sharp pair of tweezers (I'm thinking no way...), and a tiny, drill-like metal object that actually makes a whirring sound and spins. And that's what they removed the foreign body from my eye with. A tiny, blunt-ended, metal, spinning drill-like thing that made me start to cry from anxiety, and started the shaking uncontrollably almost immediately. It took about 10 minutes but he got whatever it was out, and don't worry, he deadened my eye with drops before he did it.

Let's hope this never happens again, because I really don't think I could have had two kids there with me. I want to lay down and go to sleep just thinking about it...

Mother's Day 2009!

Happy Mother's Day, everyone! This was my third Mother's Day (we celebrated the year I was expecting Abbey), and I have to say- I love Mother's Day! Of course, before I had a kid, I didn't care as much about it, but now it's great :)

When I was pregnant with Abbey, Chris bought me a blue topaz ring, so for this baby, he got me the matching necklace! Great job, Chris! I'm 14 weeks, and seeing hints that I'll maybe start to feel better soon.

Here's a picture of Abbey and I for our third Mother's Day together

Yes... we dressed alike :)

Abbey's Swing

My parents got Abbey a new swing, and from the looks of things, she LOVES it! Thank you, Mimi and Pop-pop (Meem-me and Ba-Ba)!

A little apprehensive at first...

Now look at her go! That is one happy girl!

Stagecoach Pictures!

Every year, my family goes to Salado, TX and stays at the Stagecoach Inn for Easter. This was Abbey's second Stagecoach, and she seems to love it! She loved being outside ("Ah-gah"... don't know how she came up with that) the whole time. It was so cute! Things went a little awry during the Easter egg hunt, but there was a quick recovery when she learned that all the eggs ("BUH-bulls"...she calls all round objects bubbles) were hers to play with. She even got to eat a little candy. Resse's seem to be her favorite, just like her Pops!

This one wasn't from Stagecoach, but it was too cute to pass up

What might have been a cute picture if she hadn't stolen someone else's Easter basket...

She's starting to get it!

I don't know what that face means, but it was funny!

Abbey was quite content to eat only grapes for breakfast

Abbey and Carson on the slides

She loved it! Chris taught her how to climb up the slide... awesome.

Abbey's new clothes

I've been making a lot of onesies for Abbey lately, and this is a recent favorite of ours...

Look very closely... it says Big Sister!!

We're very excited to announce that we are expecting our second baby! The estimated due date at this point is November 9, one day before my (Monica's) birthday. We appreciate all the prayers we can get, and we'll update you as we go along. After all, this is still the Baby Blog!

Playdate

We had so much fun on our playdate today! Abbey got to play with Jackson and Garrett again from Our Growing Family, and we met a new friend today, Parker from Our Family. Abbey also really enjoyed playing with Rigley, the Jordans' little dog. I think he got tired of being chased around by Abbey, so he'd bark at her every once in a while, but she just thought that was hilarious! Maybe we need to get a dog...

In the car on the way home from the playdate! I was happy :)

This is the doctor who delivered Abbey, Dr. Rachel Kurian. We love her!

Abbey Loves Disco

On Saturday, Chris and I took Abbey to a function downtown called Baby Loves Disco, and it was so much fun! Our friend, Chris Burroughs, has been taking his daughter Zoe the past few times it's been put on, so we decided to join them this time. It was located at a club called Purgatory (appropriate, right?), and they didn't leave out a single detail!

There was a DJ playing LOTS of KC and the Sunshine Band (among other hits from the Disco era), flashing colored lights, several bubble machines, hula hoops galore, bright colored scarves to dance with, a face painter, SNACKS, a story time tent with books, pillows, and lamps, interactive toys, a craft station, and some "chill-out" rooms to relax in.

We're definitely going to do that again...maybe when she's a little bigger, though :) She definitely wasn't the youngest kiddo there, but I think she was so excited by all of her new surroundings that it turned into Chris and I chasing Abbey around for two hours! We were exhausted!

Here are some pics from Saturday's dance party

Abbey found a toy

Storytime Tent (Yes, she IS in fact wearing a tutu AND pink suede boots! Chris thought it was too much, but I thought it was perfect!)

Abbey enjoying a pretzel

I think she sees something, because she clearly wants down!

Hula hoops!

Abbey, Burroughs, and Zoe having a snack

Abbey dancing with Daddy

She was very fascinated with this chain curtain

The bubble machine!!

This was the "chill out" room, though I don't see why any kid would want to chill out with all those bubbles to play in

The bubbles were her favorite part

The theme was Happy New Year, so Zoe let Abbey wear her 2009 tiara for some pictures. Thank you, Zoe!

And this was our cue to leave...she was EXHAUSTED! But still smiling :)
